In his final year of high school, Brett Canning was shown a few notes on a bass guitar and asked to fill out the bottom end on a lunchtime jam of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love. This was the beginning of an obsession with music and a career as a sideman and collaborator that took him from studying improvised music at university to touring around the world with Australian artists like Missy Higgins and The Audreys.  Brett has always written songs but his work as a bassist came first, until now.

In his debut single as a solo artist, This Feeling ties together Brett’s wide range of influences into a cohesive crescendo of ambient textures, driving bass and urgent vocals. Drawing on moods and sounds akin to Bon Iver, Radiohead and Janes Addiction, This Feeling explores mental health and anxiety through the lens of a busy mind in the midst of a global pandemic.

Following on the release of his first single,This Feeling, in early 2022, Best I Could Do (A Light in the Dark) blends driving energy with melodic rock and layers of texture to address the issue of mental health. The song looks back on darker personal times and the idea of just putting one foot in front of the other and doing the best you can with what you've got. 

This Feeling and Best I Could Do are first in a batch of new songs from this APRA Award nominated songwriter with more releases to come throughout 2023.
